Wing chun and motorbike racing may be poles apart in the world of sport, but they have come together for art's sake. When Hong Kong-born, Shanghai-based designer Simon Ma was invited to paint 12 limited-edition Diavels for Italian manufacturer Ducati, he decided they would look good with kung fu-inspired brushstrokes. The bike collection was launched at Central's Dragon-i nightclub on Tuesday night.

Ma's celebrity buddy, singer-actor Aaron Kwok Fu-shing - who Ma taught to paint - also showed up. Kwok had helped his friend with the project.
"Aaron is very inspirational - his dance and energy," Ma said. "The night before we started painting, I was so anxious that I couldn't sleep because I didn't know where to start. But the next day, after downing a cappuccino with Aaron, ideas just flooded in."

The duo decorated the bikes by using a paint-dripping technique and brushstrokes inspired by kung fu moves, Ma said. The designer also gave a demonstration, applying paint to the pricy bikes. The creative pair were obviously excited about the project and couldn't stop talking about the bikes, resulting in the press conference running longer than usual.

Kwok was given the black-and-red bike he painted with Ma as a token of Ducati's appreciation. Known for his love of sports cars, it was his first motorbike.

"Unlike cars, I can park the bike in my living room where I can see it," he said.

Owners who spend HK$280,000 on such a bike may also want to keep it in sight. (SCMP) (Sina)
